Is Belmont's Curse a Metroidvania? Official Label and Whip Gameplay
Is it officially called a Metroidvania?
KONAMI labels the game “2D Action-Exploration” on its product page. Its feature pages describe whip movement, exploration, seven weapon categories, Relics, and Arcana, but do not use “Metroidvania” as the formal product genre. Treat that as a descriptive comparison, not an official label.
What does the core loop look like?
Explore gothic stages, fight enemies and bosses, and try the whip and other equipment as you open routes. KONAMI says defeated bosses are sealed into tarot cards and become Arcana that can cast spells or provide special actions. Its overview also describes finding equipment through exploration.
Does it have ability-gated backtracking?
A spoiler-free route video shows traversal abilities being used to revisit earlier areas. That supports a Metroidvania-like reading, but it is creator guidance rather than KONAMI’s genre definition. Use the route guide for progression help and check newly reachable paths after gaining an ability.
